Cautious frequent flyers who watch their miles gather dust this holiday season have a new opportunity to make a difference thanks to United.

With Miles on a Mission, launched last week on GivingTuesday, MileagePlus members can donate miles to a number of organizations to fund travel for educational and leadership opportunities, improved access to health care, humanitarian aid, and more. In further support, United will donate five million miles to help these organizations meet their mileage goals.

“This year has presented us all with unprecedented challenges and has been particularly devastating for some of the most vulnerable members in the communities we serve. The need for charitable donations hasn’t stopped during the pandemic, and neither has United, “said Suzi Cabo, United’s chief executive officer for global community engagement. “This GivingTuesday is an opportunity for all of us to unite for the common good. We pride ourselves on providing a platform to support organizations with upcoming travel needs that will enable them to continue serving the communities they serve.”

As of December 7th, there will be nine active campaigns with goals between 250,000 miles and 1,000,000 miles. All nine campaigns were supported by at least 20%, with most already supporting more than 50%. United will earn up to 125,000 miles per campaign through December 31st.

If a campaign doesn’t achieve its goal by the end of the month, miles are returned to donors.

United lists 20 charities currently participating, and interested organizations can apply to the program quarterly. Applications for the second quarter of 2021 will reopen on January 1st.
