Last week, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden dressed up in an Air Force One leather shirt, black blazer, high heeled boots, and fishnet stockings. The look caught a strong reaction on social media, further underscoring the deep political divide our nation is facing.

Many criticized the choice of wardrobe.

Podcaster Wayne Dupree (@WayneDupreeShow) was among those who didn’t think the look was appropriate for the United States First Lady (FLOTUS), writing, “Madonna called and wants her trashy look back, Doc.”

Others seemed to like the look and shared these feelings on the social platforms.

“Dr. Jill Biden rocks those fishnet stockings and ankle boots,” @cwebbonline wrote.

Throw a wide (fish) net

Several users also started the whole controversy, indicating that Dr. Biden wasn’t even wearing fishnet stockings anyway, he was putting on lace stockings. Lessons were even offered about the differences between the two.

“Picture 1 is fishnet stockings. Picture 2 is D & G black lace stockings. Do you all get it now?” Wrote @sisler_marie along with pictures comparing the two.

Melania trending

Dr. Biden is now very much in the limelight as first lady, but the fact is, this does not apply to former first lady Melania Trump, who has largely held back during her time as first lady. But like clockwork, when the “FishnetGate” began to develop on social media, Ms. Trump was drawn into the debate, although she was not involved in any of it.

Should the first lady be a fair game?

There have been times in our history when the president’s family, including the first lady, were not viewed as a fair game, but with social media, those old rules have clearly gone the wrong way.

“People in the public are publicly screened,” said technology analyst Roger Entner of Recon Analytics.

“That’s the simple truth. Everyone has an opinion, sometimes two, on every subject,” added Entner. “The phenomenon is that now anyone can read it, not just your neighbors or your spouse. Some people like to choose others, especially when they know no one is returning the favor. It’s the price we pay for free speech. The best thing is not to feed the trolls. They are just looking for attention. “

But there is also the question of why the former first lady is drawn into this situation whenever negative comments are made about Jill Biden. It is clear that these are people who stick to their respective political paths, but it seems fascinating that the quick way on social platforms is to make the “other man” look worse as a form of defense.

“The Internet, the megaphone of outrage, has been around for as long as people have been online,” said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.

“The larger audience on social media has increased the volume without creating any clarity,” said King.

Such a comment on social media is unlikely to move the needle. Those who are Trump supporters will be calling out the Bidens, just as Biden supporters will continue to target the previous administration.

“The latest example is predictable in terms of both the voices raised and their inability to perceive irony,” King said. “After all, many of those who claimed outrage over Biden’s fishnet stockings were probably blasé about Melania Trump’s past in nude modeling. The same dynamic applies to both sides and has the same result. Over time, the faked melodrama loses its ability to go beyond it to influence a limited, shrinking group of true believers. “
