Most pet owners have to deal with unfortunate “accidents” involving their animals. This is especially true when these animals move into a new home. In this case, however, it’s not just any house, it’s the White House, and it’s Champ and Major, one of whom left more than his mark on a hallway.
The Associated Press was among the media rushing to share the story on Twitter. @AP reported, “Rest raw! Biden Pooch drops Doggie Doo in the White House hallway.”
The message was retweeted nearly 500 times and just a few hours later it had more than 2,600 likes.
While we can only hope that the leader of the free world didn’t have to personally clean up the mess, social media has allowed history to take on a life of its own. There was a lot of humor in the situation on Wednesday afternoon – many of Biden’s followers suggested that the previous resident (who didn’t have a dog) was far worse off, while others felt it was a statement of what to expect in the next four years to come from the White House.
Author Grant Stern (@grantstern) also suggested, “How long does it take for Fox News to call a special attorney to deal with Champ and Major Biden?”
Even before the final “incident,” the humor site The Onion (@TheOnion) mocked the fact that the Biden dogs got as much press as they did. “”
Some users saw no humor in the story and instead questioned the fact that this is even as widespread as it is. Singer-songwriter Ricky Davila (@The RickyDavila) commented, “Everyone is watching, some in the media have a new scandal on their hands, Champ and Major Biden are both dogs that are just dogs.”
“Anyone who turns their attention to Champ and Major instead of improving roads, bridges, water and broadband should be ashamed. #InfrastructureWeek #Biden,” wrote @amyschwert.
@angie_keathly was even more direct, writing, “It’s sad when Joe Biden’s dogs break the news of an accident on the floor while we’re having a monumental trial. Oh, and a congressman accused of sex trafficking in minors.”
“It is an indictment against the media that I know about Biden’s dogs,” added @Aspiringshill.
Dogs will be dogs
There’s no denying that the Biden dogs got off to a difficult start. Major, a three-year-old German Shepherd that the Bidens adopted in 2018, was involved in a second biting incident on Monday. This incident happened just days after the Biden dogs returned to the White House after an earlier incident.
The dogs’ “return” made the rounds on social media as well, with Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason (@ jeffmason1) writing, “Dog sighting (looks like Champ) on the Truman balcony in front of the Return of @POTUS to the White House. “
White House press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed to reporters that Champ and Major had joined the first family at Camp David, Maryland last weekend and returned to the White House. Major is actually the first dog to go from a shelter to the White House – and it’s unclear if he’ll end up in the White House again.
The “accident” in the hallway is also just the latest in a series of incidents Major was involved in. Last fall, President-elect Biden injured his foot while playing with the German Shepherd.
However, it is clear that people will continue to show their support for the Biden dogs on social media. In fact, The Oval Pawffice (@TheOvalPawffice), a fan site for Champ and Major and Winston (the “first cat”) suggested, “Oh my paw! Someone wants to destroy our repawtation! At least we’re in good company:” President Barack Obama’s dog Sunny liked to sneak away and poop in the villa. “Awooof!”
