The outage lasted more than two hours after users reported problems just before 7 p.m. EST, according to DownDetector.
While the YouTube website was working, videos were stuck on a black screen with a white loading circle.
Users flocked to Twitter Wednesday night to express their frustrations about the outage, which resulted in the trending hashtag #YouTubeDOWN and lots of jokes about the situation.
In a tweet, YouTube said: … And we’re back – we’re so sorry for the interruption. This is fixed on all devices and YouTube services, thank you for being patient with us. “
The company did not provide any information on the causes of the failure.
